County officials urged Memorial Hospital of Carbon County administrators to allow the town of Hanna to use its vacant clinic.

The Memorial Hospital of Carbon County Family Practice Clinic in Hanna, located at 1008 Feldspar Court, closed in 2025 following the retirement of Physician Assistant Peggy Lake. Efforts to find Lake’s permanent replacement were unsuccessful and, citing “mounting operational losses,” the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees opted to close the clinic in April 2025. The facility has remained vacant ever since.

Back in March, Hanna Mayor Charlie George announced that Steve Martin, a physician assistant with Pathfinder Medical and Saratoga Urgent Care, was willing to begin seeing patients in Hanna. Mayor George said Martin and administrators with Memorial Hospital of Carbon County, which owns the clinic building, were prepared to reach an agreement to reopen the facility in roughly a month and a half.

That time has passed, and the Hanna Clinic is still closed.

Speaking during Tuesday’s Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Sue Jones pressed the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees to make the shuttered clinic available to the town of Hanna. Commissioner Jones said the hospital is losing money by keeping the building closed and that the town may have a use for it.

Commissioner Jones reminded the Memorial Hospital administration that the Town of Hanna owns the land that the clinic occupies. The town holds the deed to the property while a later resolution gave the hospital authority to construct the clinic building.

Memorial Hospital Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Hinkle said she and CEO Kerry Ashment are still in talks with Hanna Mayor Charlie George about a future purpose for the clinic.

Commissioner Sue Jones said the hospital should work more closely with Mayor George on a deal to allow the town to use the vacant clinic. Instead of expecting a monetary return, Jones suggested settling for public goodwill.

Commissioner Jones said the small population of Hanna would appreciate Memorial Hospital allowing outside providers to use the clinic.

No new information about the potential reopening of the Hanna Clinic is available at this time.
