Friday was the last day to file to run in the 2026 elections. The Carbon County Clerk’s Office released the final candidate list soon after the filing period closed.
Sitting county commissioners Travis Moore and John Johnson are the only declared candidates for the two open Board of Commissioners seats. Each candidate is seeking another term. The county assessor, attorney, clerk, clerk of district court, and treasurer all have a single candidate, the incumbent. Deputy Coroner Shayna Casada is running against sitting County Coroner Brittany Nyman for the office. In the sheriff’s race, incumbent Alex Bakken will be running against Ted Kranenberg, the former marshal of Hanna in the primary elections.
As of last week, no one had registered to run for an elected office in Baggs. However, by the time filing closed, three candidates had filed for mayor: incumbent Matt Howell, Scott Michael Allison, and Donny Kisner. No candidates have filed for the open Baggs Town Council seats.
In Dixon, former mayor and Carbon County Higher Education Center BOCHES Chairman Matt Feldmann is seeking to return to the mayor’s office. Town Council member Raymond Hauger is also seeking another term on the governing body.
Elk Mountain Mayor Morgan Irene remains the only candidate for the position, while Parks and Cemetery Board Chairman Brett Larson joins sitting council members Craig Mustard and Linda Crane in the race for the two open council seats.
Carbon County School District Two Recreation Board Chairman Jim McKinney is seeking the mayor’s seat in Encampment. Sitting council member Steve Reichert is competing with former council member Gary Stull, former Grand Encampment Museum Director John Farr, and Mother Mountain Anglers founder Wyatt Craig for a place on the governing body.
Hanna Mayor Charlie George is running unopposed for another term, while current town council member David Felix, High Country Joint Powers Board member Marcia Beals, and Timothy Born are seeking seats on the council.
In Medicine Bow, Mayor Justin George is seeking reelection. Crystal Mayfield and Trevor Strauch are running for another term on the Town Council.
No one has filed to run as mayor of Riverside. Meanwhile, Billie Helwick and sitting town council member Lisa Lorenz are running for the two open council seats.
Saratoga Mayor Chuck Davis is running for reelection, as are council members Jerry Fluty and Bub Barkhurst. Tiffany Moore, wife of Saratoga Police Chief John Moore, is also seeking a place on the town council.
Cullen Meeks is seeking reelection as the mayor of Sinclair. He will run against Eugene Goetz Jr in the primary election. Stephanie Haldorson and council member Nancy Sanders are running for seats on the governing body.
And in Rawlins, incumbent Bruce Seilaff is running against Board of Adjustments member Eddie Archuleta, Carbon County Public Health Communicable Disease Specialist Megan Cragun, and longtime officeholder Debari Martinez to represent Ward One. Rawlins High School computer science and engineering teacher Cristy Magagna is unopposed for the Ward Two council seat. Peak Construction owner Cody Bluth is running against incumbent Steve Sanger for the Ward Three seat. Christine Cruz‑Ford and Shalan Crenshaw are seeking the at‑large seat currently held by Mayor Jacquelin Wells.
In the statewide legislative races, District 47 Representative Bob Davis is seeking to fill Senator Larry Hicks’s seat and will face off against Democrat Jim Wilson of Rock Springs in November. Baggs rancher Eamon O’Toole is unopposed for Davis’s former seat, and District 15 Representative Pam Thayer is seeking reelection.
Races without a registered candidate will be filled by write‑in nominees. Under state law, write‑in county and state candidates must receive at least 25 votes and be registered with their associated political party by primary election day. For municipal offices, individuals only need three write-in votes to win. The winning write-in candidate must then formally accept their nomination by filing at the appropriate election office and paying the required fee.
The 2026 primary elections will be held on August 18th.
