Tomorrow is the last day to file to run for elected office. With the recent announcement by Sheriff Archie Roybal that he will not run for a second term, the list of candidates to replace him has filled expanded quickly.

Four are running as Republicans. Alex Bakken of Rawlins was the first to announce. Since then, Deputies John Moore and Ben Opfar, as well as Undersheriff Shawn Kelly have filed to run. Former Undersheriff Mike Morris, who is no longer with the department, filed as a Democrat.

Other county offices that will see primary races include the coroner’s position. Brittany Nyman, who was appointed by the county commissioners shortly before the passing of long-time coroner Paul Zamora last year, will face David Gier of Rawlins.

We might even see a race for county attorney. Sarah Chavez Harkins has filed to run as a Republican. Chavez Harkins is currently the Chief Deputy Carbon County and Prosecuting Attorney with the County Attorney’s Office. She is the only candidate to have filed as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The only other contested race as of this writing is for County Assessor. Renee Snider and Courtney Ney are both running as Republican for the four-year term.

More candidates may come on board today and tomorrow. The candidate filing period is open through Friday, May 27, at 5 p.m.
