With the retirement of the superintendent of Carbon County School District 2 approaching quickly, the process of vetting a successor begins in earnest this month. Dr. Jim Copeland announced in October that he will retire at the end of this school year after eight years with the district.

The list of applicants for the superintendent position has been pared down to three finalists. Two of the candidates are from within the district. The third grew up here.

One of the candidates, Darrin Jennings, has served as interim superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal and teacher in the Carbon 2 district. Jennings has over 20 years of experience in the field.

Noel Manning currently serves as the district’s Director of Curriculum. Manning has 14 years of education experience.

The third finalist, Coley Shadrick, was raised in the Platte Valley and is currently serving in his fifth year as the Superintendent for Converse County School District 2 in Glenrock.

The Board of Trustees will meet in three executive sessions this month to interview the candidates. Public meetings with each of the candidates will be held in Saratoga and in Hanna, also in the coming weeks.

The Board of Trustees of Carbon County School District 2 will meet in Executive Session on February 15, 17 and the 22nd to interview the candidates. The executive session meetings will be held in the White Room at the Platte Valley Community Center.

Public meetings will also be held with the candidates this month in a series of community forums where district staff, patrons and members of the community will be able to ask questions. Here is the schedule for the community forums:

Darrin Jennings will be at the Hanna Rec Center on February 14 and at the PVCC on February 15th.

Noel Manning will be available for comments and questions in Hanna on February 16 and in Saratoga the following night on February 17.

Coley Shadrick will be in Hanna at the Rec Center on February 21s and at the Platte Valley Community Center in Saratoga on February 22nd.

The public meetings in Hanna and Saratoga are scheduled to start at 5:30.
Community and staff can submit questions before the meetings through a portal on the Carbon 2 website.

The cover letters submitted by each of the candidates are posted on the Carbon County District 2 website, as well, along with the times and dates of this month’s public question and answer sessions.

When Dr. Copeland announced his retirement in October, Bigfoot 99’s Cali O’Hare produced a profile of the outgoing superintendent. Here it is.
