In Rawlins, a house dating back 100 years will be torn down to make way for more parking. At the April 18th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Building and Grounds Manager Mike Newbrough asked the board to approve the demolition of the century-old home at 222 West Pine Street, in Rawlins. Newbrough said the contract authorized Ace Construction, out of Riverton, to tear down the house.

County Clerk Gwen Bartlett said the county purchased the 3-bedroom, 1,300 square foot house last year as part of the Carbon County Courthouse and Carbon Building remodel project. Bartlett said the house was made safe for demolition and will be brought down within the next month.

Bartlett said the house, located on the northwest corner of the Carbon Building and Courthouse Annex property, will make way for additional parking. The county clerk said the added spots would be set aside for official vehicles, opening more parking for visitors.

Bartlett said the homeowners contacted the county, via a 3rd party, about selling the property. The county clerk said in an attempt to avoid demolishing the 116-year-old structure, the county advertised for bids to relocate the house. None were received.

The county commissioners unanimously voted to approve the contract with Hays Trucking of Rawlins. Without someone willing to foot the bill to have the house moved, its fate has been sealed. Demolition of the home at 222 West Pine Street will begin soon.
