Carbon County Commissioners are asking residents to recognize victim’s advocates during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
This week, April 21st through the 27th is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. In 1981, President Ronald Regan created the awareness campaign to recognize and support victims of all types of crime.
During last week’s Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting in Sinclair, Victim Witness Coordinator Loretta Hansen said this year’s National Crime Victim’s Rights Week theme is Seek Justice, Ensure Victims’ Rights, and Inspire Hope. Hanson said she and fellow Witness Victim Advocate, Dawnette Spaulding, offer hope to victims of crime in Carbon County.
Commissioner John Johnson said the services provided by the Victim Witness Program is essential to helping crime victims know where to turn. Commissioner Johnson thanked both Hansen and Spaulding.
Following Hansen’s comments, Commissioner Travis Moore read a proclamation marking April 21st through the 27th as National Crime Victim’s Rights Week. Commissioner Moore said victims may continue to suffer after a crime has occurred and the county must commit to helping them.
Commissioner Moore said the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Victim Witness Program is dedicated to providing options, services, and hope for victims of all crime.
Continuing to read from the proclamation, Moore said the board thanks everyone who supports crime victims.
Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken said crime victims can often be overlooked in the pursuit of justice. Sheriff Bakken said Hansen and Spaulding keep his deputies grounded to the suffering of crime victims.
The Board of Carbon County Commissioners officially recognized this week as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
