The human remains found south of Rawlins were confirmed by the Carbon County Coroner to be those of the hunter who went missing in a snowstorm three years ago.

Sheriff Archie Roybal said Wednesday forensic evidence led to the positive identification of the remains as those of Mark Strittmater, who disappeared south of Rawlins on October 19, 2019. In a news release, the Sheriff Roybal said the identification was made through examination of the remains and Strittmater’s dental records.

The remains were found in a densely wooded area approximately 325 yards from prior search areas. No evidence was found that foul play was involved.

Stritmatter was reported missing following a heavy fall snowstorm. The attempt to locate him three years ago included several search and rescue teams, a helicopter from Classic Air Rescue, drones and K-9 teams from Carbon and surrounding counties. Sheriff Roybal told Bigfoot that he even participated on three searches.

The sheriff thanked the agencies and individuals who participated in the search efforts.

Two more searches were conducted last week after a group of hunters from Wisconsin discovered a rifle and other personal belongings on Sunday, October 16th.

In Wednesday’s statement, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and the County Coroner’s Office extended their condolences to Strittmater’s family, who have asked for privacy at this time.
