During the July 5th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, County IT Director Matt Webster informed the board that the county website domain name would need to change. Webster said he would present a letter to request a new domain name at an upcoming commissioners meeting.

At the July 5th meeting, Commissioner John Johnson asked Webster why the county needed to change its website extension. Webster said websites ending in .gov are more trusted by the public.

Chairwoman Sue Jones asked if a .gov website would attract more hackers attempting to disrupt governmental operations. Webster said the public will feel more confident that they are interacting with a genuine government website. The IT Director said the Wyoming Secretary of State is demanding the change.

At Tuesday’s commissioners meeting, IT Director Webster asked the board to sign a letter officially requesting the domain name carboncountywy.gov. Chairwoman Jones asked how long the county had before the switch over to the new web hosting service occurred. Webster said he still had a lot of technical work to do. The IT Director said the county will continue to use the current .com web address until they are forced under the .gov umbrella.

Webster said the deadline for the changeover was November of 2024.

Commissioner Johnson motioned to allow Chairwoman Jones to sign the letter requesting the carboncountywy.gov domain name. The motion was seconded and passed.
