The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver Monday ruled that people have a protected First Amendment right to film police while they do their jobs.

The court covers Colorado and five neighboring states, including, Wyoming. The 10th circuit ruling came in the case of an internet blogger, Abade Irizarry, who said Denver police blocked him from filming a traffic stop in 2019.

A three-judge panel from the court said that the “right to film police falls squarely within the first Amendment’s core purposes to protect free and robust discussion of public affairs, hold government officials accountable and check abuse of power. The ruling conforms with similar decisions in six of the nation’s 12 other appeals courts.
