State authorities are warning Wyoming residents about an extortion scam that seemingly involves child porn to extort money from victims.
At least two reports of the alleged scheme originated in Natrona County this week. Officials from the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force sent out the initial alert about the scheme.
According to officials, the letter includes a link to a website. Clicking on the link will expose your computer to hackers who can gain access to your computer files.
The link also demands some form of payment within a designated period of time or law enforcement will be notified.
The letter, which arrives through U.S. Mail, to the recipient’s home address has the appearance of authority and some level of research.
The mailer could mention family members by name. It also includes a URL and QR code for Bitcoin or some other form of payment in the extortion attempt.
Authorities are asking anyone who received such a letter not to open it. Preserve the evidence and report it immediately to local authorities or to the Casper DCI office at 307-261-2194.
