Lingering snow drifts in Encampment and Riverside has forced organizers to cancel the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Unusually heavy snowfall this winter has left its mark. Snowpack in the Upper Platte River Valley is 133% of average. With so much snow still on the ground, the Encampment Riverside Volunteer Fire Department has canceled the Easter Egg Hunt this year.

Encampment Town Clerk and Treasurer Doreen Harvey explained the park is too dangerous for the kids and the dozen or so volunteers hosting the event.

Harvey said this is the first time the Easter Egg Hunt has been canceled since she began working for the town around 20 years ago. When asked why the event wasn’t simply moved indoors, Harvey said no one considered the option. The town canceled its order for 360 eggs and prepared to donate the candy to the Encampment K-12 School.

The children of Encampment and Riverside will have to wait until next year to search for treats left behind by the Easter Bunny. At least the kids will still be able to enjoy the Easter candy.
