The Carbon County School District Two Board of Cooperative Educational Services is hosting a free genealogy workshop in Saratoga next week.

On Friday, September 15th, at the Platte Valley Community Center, Doug Brecheisen and his wife Theresa will guide people through the steps necessary to research their family trees. Brecheisen said he is personally acquainted with BOCES Coordinator Stacy Erickson. Brecheisen said Erickson suggested he and his wife use their experience and love of genealogy to help people map out their family history.

Using a free computer program provided by the Genealogical Society of Utah called FamilySearch, Brecheisen said users can explore several different genealogical records, including the National Archives, for distant relatives. Brecheisen said with some basic information about your closest deceased relative, he can search through the records to see if a family tree already exists.

Brecheisen said he’ll also use a website called Ancestry.com to create family trees for attendees of next Friday’s class. However, unlike the website FamilySearch, Ancestry.com requires a paid membership to access its genealogy services.

Brecheisen said he also uses a website called MyHeritage. While MyHeritage is not free to use, Brecheisen said the website has a worthwhile feature. He said MyHeritage uses AI to determine when a photograph was taken.

Brecheisen said next Friday’s Family History Class is open to people in any stage of the genealogy process. From people just starting out to those who have already begun researching their family trees, Brecheisen said he can provide guidance.

Brecheisen said he can assist people who may have hit a roadblock in their genealogy research. If he and his wife can’t help, Brecheisen said he can reach out to experts.

Brecheisen said he and his wife became interested in genealogy after being called on by the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Members of the church are assigned a calling from church officials. Brecheisen’s wife Theresa explained why she enjoys creating family trees.

The Carbon County School District Two’s BOCES Family History Class is next Friday, September 15th. The class will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Shively Room at the Platte Valley Community Center. Attendees are asked to bring an internet capable device, such as a phone, laptop, or tablet.

To register, call Stacy Erickson at 339-3033 or email her at serickson@crb2.org. The class is free to attend.
