Two more free library boxes will be installed in Saratoga.

Outside the town hall, along Third Street, a small wooden box of books has been installed for people to take and return at their leisure, free of charge. The Saratoga Friends of the Library built and installed the box. At Tuesday’s town council meeting, Friends of the Library member Addie Meyers said she would like to place two more boxes around town.

The free library boxes are small wooden cabinets containing donated books. People are free to take the books and return them or replace them with a different item.

Meyers said her reason for coming before the council, was to request town employees to help install the support beams that hold the book boxes. She also suggested having students help design the cabinets.

Meyers said the Friends of the Library group was considering having the students hold a contest to redesign the existing library box outside of town hall.

Meyers said they regularly check on the box in town to ensure it doesn’t fill with junk. The box was made by the members of the Saratoga Friends of the Library. Meyers said the county library board is donating money towards construction of the two new boxes. She asked the town to help dig the post holes.

The council members expressed support for the project. Mayor Chuck Davis asked for a motion to allow town employees to assist with the installation of the two new free library boxes. The motion passed. Meyers said she doesn’t have a concrete timeline on when the new boxes will be installed, but she expects work to begin in early summer.
