Among the engrossed bills that Governor Mark Gordon signed into law this week was the Second Amendment Protection Act. Senate File 102 passed both chambers by wide margins: 22-8 in the Senate and 43-15 with two abstaining in the House.

The four pages of legislation forbids the use of any state funds from being used to administer or cooperate with any unconstitutional act, law treaty, executive order, rule or regulation of the federal government that infringes on Second Amendment rights, including the regulation of firearms, accessories or ammunition. It also prohibits the enforcement of unconstitutional firearm restrictions. Violations are a misdemeanor and carry a fine of up to $2,000 and a one year in jail.

Senator Larry Hicks of Baggs, the bill’s sponsor, explained its intent at a news conference last month.

Senator Hicks was surrounded by sheriffs and Wyoming police officers, as was Governor Gordon when he signed the bill into law on Monday. The law becomes effective July 1st.
