In Washington, D.C., Wyoming’s sole member in the U.S. House, Harriet Hageman, said she supports Rep. Jim Jordan’s bid to be speaker.
Following this week’s shocking ouster of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, Jordan, the chair of the Judiciary Committee from Ohio, is one of two declared candidates to take the gavel. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana is the other.
Endorsements are rolling in for each of the candidates, but a frontrunner has yet to emerge.
Hageman, the first-term congresswoman from Wyoming, made her position official on Thursday.
In a written statement to Breitbart News on Thursday, Hageman said, “Jim Jordan is the definition of a solid conservative and a truly effective leader, and I am proud to publicly express my strong support for him to become the next Speaker of the House.”
Hageman added that Jordan provided guidance and counsel in her effort to unseat Liz Cheney in last year’s election.
“He didn’t blink, he didn’t flinch, and he was in from the get-go,” Hageman added.
Cheney, Wyoming’s former representative who has since moved back to Virginia where she lived prior to moving to Jackson, to enable her run for the Equality State’s lone seat in the U.S. House, offered a dark warning about Jordan at the liberal University of Minnesota on Wednesday night.
Cheney, speaking about Jordan’s bid for the gavel, told the audience, “If they were to decide that, there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected Republicans could be counted on to defend the Constitution.”
Jordan is a close ally of Donald Trump. During Cheney’s final months in Congress, she was one of the 10 GOP lawmakers to vote in favor of Trump’s second impeachment and one of two Republicans to serve on the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack.
Hageman, who trounced Cheney in last year’s primary election with 66% of the vote, said Jordan has been a “warrior” and steadfast in his efforts to root out the Biden “family corruption” and stop the weaponization of the federal government.
Hageman added, “We desperately need a conservative leader who will fight against the growth of government, against increased government spending, and against the Swamp that controls Washington, which Jim has been doing for his entire career.”
In the house, no frontrunner has emerged in the race for speaker. Both Jordan and Scalise are making the rounds to various groups within the GOP conference to earn support.
The top task for either candidate is to win enough support from the slim GOP majority that can carry them to victory on the House floor. Scalise, in making his case, told House members that he has a track record of bringing together diverse viewpoints within the Republican conference.
The campaigning comes ahead of a Tuesday candidate forum and a Wednesday vote in the GOP conference on a nominee for Speaker.
