Fourth graders in Hanna are putting on a living wax museum portraying figures with ties to the area.

For their fourth-grade school project, Hanna Elementary School students are staging a living wax museum. Hanna Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Sarah Jones said the kids will perform as people with a close connection with Hanna, such as Ed McAtee.

Jones said she teaches the children about the people who influenced the history of the area. She said afterwards, the students choose the characters they want to depict.

Jones said the students were not limited to choosing people who shaped the character of the town. She described how one student chose to act as Edith Birchall Erickson, a young woman whose entire family was killed in the 1908 Hanna Mine #1 explosion.

Jones said the project is meant to tell the stories of people who not only inhabited Hanna and the surrounding area, but also people whose lives were altered by the town. She said another student has chosen to represent David Elias, a mine inspector who was killed in the 1908 mine disaster.

The students will dress in period appropriate attire and have a short lecture prepared detailing their character’s life. The kids will stand in place and, when an attendee presses a button in front of them, they will recite their speech.

Jones said the Hanna Elementary School students will have the privilege of seeing the performance before the public. The Hanna Living Wax Museum will open to the public at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 10th. Entrance is free of charge.

All are invited to come watch history come alive.
