The Hanna Basin Museum will be holding a series of history-inspired activities for Carbon County homeschoolers.

Hanna Basin Museum Director Gerry Hutchens will educate children about the history of the west through engaging presentations.

Beginning on Tuesday, March 26th, Museum Director Hutchens will be hosting the first homeschooler class on the Pony Express. Hutchens said the well-known mail service is a great introduction to the history of the Cowboy State.

Hutchens said she will involve the children in her presentation about the Missouri to California mail route. The museum director, clearly excited by history, explained how the Pony Express operated.

Hutchens said Pony Express races will be staged around the Hanna Basin Museum grounds. Students will recite the oath made by each Pony Express rider not to swear, drink, or fight while carrying transcontinental mail. A butter churning demonstration is also scheduled.

Hutchens said the Hanna Museum activities are designed to reach out to homeschool groups around the county and provide an outlet for them to meet and learn about history. The museum director said the homeschool presentations will also serve as a way for her to show her appreciation to the people of Carbon County for financially supporting the museum.

Hutchens said she has three of the homeschool classes planned. The first will be about the Pony Express. The second class will focus on the Overland Trail and its impact on America’s westward expansion. The third class the museum director has created will be on the introduction of the railroad. Hutchens said she is open to holding more than three classes if the activities are popular.

The first homeschool presentation on the Pony Express is Tuesday, March 26th at 1:00pm at the Hanna Basin Museum, located at 502 Front Street in Hanna. The classes are expected to last two hours. Admission is free.

To register for the homeschool activities, call the Hanna Basin Museum at 325-6465 or join the Hanna Homeschooling Group Facebook page. Classes will be limited to 10 students.
