A Hanna resident is seeking vendors to support the town’s recreation center.

With the cost of funding the facility exceeding a quarter of a million dollars a year, the Hanna Recreation Center has been a recent topic of concern for town officials. Services at the rec center, including the large heated indoor swimming pool, may have to be cut if the town can’t find a way to fill a funding gap caused by lower tax revenues and decline in impact assistance monies. At a meeting held last week, officials said funding the rec center was taking money away from other town improvement projects, including street maintenance.

Hanna resident Darlene Scheneman is working on a way to help keep the rec center open. Scheneman, who sells baked goods under the name Granny D’s, has arranged the first farmers market in Hanna. Scheneman said for a $10 donation to the rec center, vendors will receive a booth in the park next to the facility. She said the farmers market is open to anyone who wants to help the rec center.

The Hanna farmers market is planned to be held every other Friday afternoon, beginning on July 21st. Scheneman said she sells her baked goods there as well. She said she scheduled the Hanna market so it would not overlap with Saratoga’s.

Scheneman said she envisions the farmers market becoming more than just a place for people to buy and sell goods. She said she would like to provide a fun destination for the entire region.

Besides produce and homemade crafts, Scheneman said she will allow people to sell quality used items as well. She said she wants the farmers market to become a community-wide event with a large variety of vendors.

As of Wednesday, Scheneman said around eight vendors have expressed interest in participating in the Hanna farmer’s market. She said the event will happen no matter how many people she has signed up. However, she said she would prefer to have a large assortment of items available for sale.

Scheneman asked the public to tell her what they want to see at a future event. She said she wants to expand what the farmers market has to offer.

The first Hanna farmers market will be Friday, July 21 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. The market is scheduled to take place every other Friday, but Scheneman said future dates haven’t been finalized. Vendor booths are $10 a day. Food trucks will be charged $20. The money will be treated as a donation to the Hanna Recreation Center.

If you are interested in participating in the Hanna farmers market, message Darlene Scheneman on Facebook or call her at 307-359-8718. She said to leave her a message and she’ll get back to you. You may also contact the Hanna town hall at 325-9424 for more information.
