The level of high country snowpack feeding the Upper North Platte River Basin increased significantly in December. After a relatively dry November and early December, the snowpack level stood at a slim 65 percent of median on December 7th.

After the big storms in the middle of the month, snowpack rose to 83 percent yesterday. That’s up over last year, according to the NRCS, when snowpack was 74 percent of median.

This time two years ago, though, snowpack in the drainages feeding the North Platte was 123 percent. Statewide snowpack and snow-water-equivalent is down from last year, according to the NRCS reporting: 70 percent of median this week, compared to 79 percent last year. Meteorologist Don Day said the high country will get another shot of snow this weekend.
