Wyoming Highway Patrol released additional information about yesterday’s bridge strike near Rawlins.
Around 9 o’clock yesterday morning, Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers received reports of a maroon-colored semi‑truck that crashed into the Higley Boulevard Bridge in Rawlins. In a media release about the incident, Highway Patrol Senior Public Relations Specialist Aaron Brown wrote that the truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 when the driver drifted off the pavement and into the median, striking the cable barrier and eastbound guardrail. The vehicle then hit the concrete bridge supports in the median of Exit 214, completely destroying one of the four pillars.
The tractor came to rest several truck lengths from the bridge, while the trailer became embedded in the remaining three pillars, its right side torn open halfway along its length.
The driver and co‑driver are reported to have suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries. The crash is still under active investigation by Wyoming Highway Patrol, and a cause has not been determined at this time.
Due to the damage, Exit 214 to Higley Boulevard has been closed to all traffic while crews with the Wyoming Department of Transportation assess the condition of the bridge. Traffic is being detoured around the closure, which is likely to negatively impact travel times in the area.
Senior Public Information Specialist Brown wrote that Wyoming Highway Patrol would like to extend a huge thank you to the Rawlins Police and Fire Departments for their help with the crash response and traffic control.
