The Border War Friday night means highway patrol troopers on both sides of the Wyoming-Colorado state line will be on the road Friday night, patrolling for impaired drivers.

The cross-state game between the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University is one of the oldest rivalries in college football. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. Friday night in Laramie. Gameday will be busy with fans traveling from Colorado and all over Wyoming.

Highway Patrol troopers from both states will be on the roadways looking for impaired drivers.

The multi-agency effort on the Wyoming side of the border includes the Highway Patrol, Laramie Police Department, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, University of Wyoming Police Department, Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cheyenne Police Department.

A similar multi-agency effort will be deployed in northern Colorado, as well.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol also urges residents to report suspected drunk drivers to their hotline: 1-800-442-9090.

The enforcement effort on Friday is intended to help ensure fans traveling back and forth to the game are safe on I-80, I-25 and US 287 as law enforcement agencies target dangerous drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

According to CDOT data, one-third of fatal crashes in Colorado involved an impaired driver, with 33 fatalities on Larimer County roads just this year, and 11 of those fatalities involving impaired drivers.

So far this year, 119 people have died on Wyoming roadways compared to 112 at this time in 2022.
