The center piece of Never Forget Memorial Park is coming closer to becoming a reality. The Platte Valley Arts Council, which is underwriting the creation of an art piece memorializing Staff Sgt. Tyler Pickett of Saratoga, who was killed in Iraq, has chosen the artist to create the work.

The PVAC announced Sunday that Sierra Smith will design a metal sculpture depicting the various aspects of Pickett’s life. According to a news release, the piece will depict Pickett a soldier, Wyoming resident and a person.

Smith plans to include barbed wire, large rusted iron rings, and dated architectural metal pieces forged into shapes representing parts of Pickett’s life, such as a cowboy hat and Army helmet.

A local artist, Smith recycles discarded and found materials to create pieces that reflect the material world and culture of where they originated.

Smith’s memorial to Sgt. Pickett will be placed in the new “Never Forget Park” on Pic Pike Road in Saratoga, next to Veterans Island Park. The unveiling is set for September 3rd.
