U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., is blasting the U.S. Postal Service for threatening to shut down two postal processing centers in Wyoming. Lummis has shared a letter she sent to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy regarding the USPS’ review of the USPS Processing and Distribution Centers in Casper and Cheyenne.
The US Postal Service has proposed moving Cheyenne’s Processing and Distribution Center operations to Denver. The change would require mail sent from one Wyoming address to another Wyoming address in certain ZIP codes to be sent out-of-state to be processed before sent back to Wyoming to be delivered.
The proposal would undoubtedly lead to delays in mail delivery and transfer several USPS jobs, a news release from Lummis’ office said.
“Any attempt by the Biden administration to say this is about fiscal responsibility is laughable,” Sen. Lummis said in her statement.
Lummis said she has experienced firsthand unnecessary delays and interruptions in mail service after Wyoming mail was processed in another state. The delays occurred after the Rock Springs sorting facility closed. “Leaving the capital city of Wyoming without reliable postal service is completely unacceptable,” Lummis wrote.
The postal service argues that the reorganization and rerouting of Wyoming mail to Colorado would save the federal government an estimated $2.5-to-3.3 million.
Lummis, in her letter, said “the money saved by the reorganization would pale in comparison to the $4 billion being requested for the new FBI headquarters, $3 billion pledged to the United Nations climate crusade and countless other radical left-wing initiatives that waste Wyoming tax dollars.”
Under the two-pronged proposal, the USPS would move mail processing from Cheyenne to Denver and from Casper to Billings, Montana. As many as seven jobs in Wyoming will be terminated if the postal service moves ahead with the plan.
Lummis supported the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 that allocated $40 billion for the USPS to modernize the nation’s postal network, not to reduce service in Wyoming, the release said.
