Colorado police announced the arrest of a man in connection with a Baggs shooting. The incident is unrelated to last month’s shooting of a Carbon County sheriff’s deputy.
According to Crimewatch.net, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado arrested 37‑year‑old Alejandro Rodriguez‑Zarraga in connection with a shooting early Sunday morning in Baggs.
Around 1:40 Sunday morning, Moffat County deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim 13 miles south of the Wyoming border on Colorado Highway 13 near mile marker 115. Officers spotted a red Ford Raptor in the area and followed the vehicle to Memorial Regional Health in Craig, Colorado. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office has declined to release any additional information about the victim at this time.
During the course of the investigation, officers determined that the victim was shot in Baggs and arrested Alejandro Rodriguez-Zarraga for Possession of a Weapon While Under the Influence and Theft of a Firearm. The suspect was allegedly shooting the firearm outside of the Ford Raptor when the victim was hit. The gun was recovered, and authorities report no continuing risk to the public.
The investigation remains active, and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Colorado authorities.
Yesterday’s incident is unrelated to the June 8th shooting that seriously injured Carbon County sheriff’s deputy Sergeant Zach Burns. Sergeant Burns was shot in the neck, arm, and hip while responding to reports of a man with a gun in Baggs. The wounded officer was taken by medical helicopter to a trauma center in Colorado in critical condition.
On June 23rd, Sheriff Alex Bakken wrote on social media that Sergeant Burns’s condition was steadily improving. Although he still has a long road to recovery, Sheriff Bakken stated that he is optimistic that Sergeant Burns will continue to improve.
Sheriff Bakken thanked the community for the support shown to the Burns family and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.
