Medicine Bow officials formally support a plan to designate the Lincoln Highway as a statewide scenic byway.

As reported by Toga Radio, the Carbon County Visitors Council, also known as Discover Carbon County, is leading an effort to have the 113-year-old Lincoln Highway designated as a Wyoming scenic byway. Discover Carbon County Sales and Tourism Development Manager Megan McComas explained that the designation will encourage travelers to leave Interstate 80 and visit Medicine Bow and Hanna, boosting tourism in northern Carbon County.

During the October 12th Medicine Bow Town Council meeting, Clerk and Treasurer Karen Heath announced that Discover Carbon County was asking for a letter of support from the town for the Lincoln Highway scenic byway application. The governing body expressed its support for the proposal, making and seconding a motion to approve the letter. Before the vote, Councilman Lee Cook asked if the council should approve a correspondence it had not read. Clerk Heath responded that the Council could write their own letter or she can request a template from the Visitors Council.

Clerk Heath clarified that the motion was to have her write a letter of support to designate the Lincoln Highway as a scenic byway. Council members Trevor Strauch and Kristi Wickizer both expressed their approval of the proposal.

Mayor Justin George said he will write his own letter to Discover Carbon County expressing support for the project while avoiding any specific commitments from the town. Councilman Lee Cook said he was satisfied with the mayor’s idea.

Following the discussion, the Medicine Bow Town Council unanimously voted to draft a letter of support for Discover Carbon County’s proposal to designate the Lincoln Highway as a state scenic byway. If approved by the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s Scenic Byways and Backways Program, Lincoln Highway would become Carbon County’s third scenic byway, joining Snowy Range Pass and Battle Pass.
