Rawlins Police responded early Thursday to a report of a mountain lion in the city.

Rawlins Police Chief Mike Ward said in the early morning hours of July 27th, officers received a call from a citizen claiming to have seen a mountain lion. Chief Ward said the big cat was supposedly spotted near 7th and Birch Streets, in the Mountain View neighborhood. Ward said the mountain lion has, so far, evaded capture.

Chief Ward said big cats are seen occasionally around the Wyoming Frontier Prison. The police chief said mountain lions will come down off the Rawlins Uplift and into the northeastern portions of the city, as well.

As of yesterday afternoon, Chief Ward said his department has received only a single call about the mountain lion. Game and Fish have been unsuccessful in tracking down the animal.
