The Encampment gardening club is beginning a free plant exchange program.

Formed in 1933, the Encampment Dirt Diggers Garden Club currently has 41 members. Starting today, the gardening club is providing a way for residents to exchange their houseplants, called Bring a Plant, Take a Plant.

Dirt Diggers member Liz Davis said club members typically exchange plants with one another. Davis said the members decided to share the joy of plants with the entire community. If residents support Bring a Plant, Take a Plant, Davis said the Dirt Diggers Garden Club will keep the program running indefinitely.

Today is the first day of the plant exchange. Residents will find a selection of more than 50 easy to maintain indoor plants at the Encampment town hall and library. Davis said people are welcome to leave an outdoor plant in exchange for a houseplant.

Davis said the majority of plants offered in today’s Bring a Plant, Take a Plant program were grown by the most gifted horticulturists of the Dirt Diggers.

Encampment officials have allowed the gardening club to use the town hall for the plant exchange program. Davis said residents may freely access the town hall at any time.

Like the town hall, the Encampment and Riverside Library is also participating in the Dig Diggers plant exchange. Davis said residents will only be able to trade plants during regular library hours.

The Encampment Dirt Diggers Garden Club’s Bring a Plant, Take a Plant program begins today at noon. Davis asked that exchange plants be healthy enough for other community members to enjoy. Residents may exchange as many plants as they like free of charge.
