The deadline for Carbon County homeowners to receive property tax refunds is nearing.

Carbon County Treasurer Lindsey West is trying to spread the word about available property tax refunds. West said applications to the state-funded tax relief program must be received by June 5th. The county treasurer said residents must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the tax refund.

As well as residential restrictions, West said the program has an income cutoff. The County Treasurer said households in Carbon County must make below a certain threshold to qualify for the tax refund.

The property tax refund program also has a $150,000 limit on the total value of assets a person may own. West explained some of the things that are considered assets and the exceptions the state allows.

West said residents are limited on how large of a refund they can receive. The county treasurer explained that the total refund a resident is entitled to is based on their income and the average tax burden of the county.

The program ends on June 5th. West said Carbon County residents have several ways of applying for their property tax refund.

West said residents may return their completed applications to her office. The county treasurer said people can file their documents in other ways as well.

West said everyone in the county who meets the eligibility requirements has the potential to receive a refund. She said the state won’t reject incomplete or improperly written applications outright. West said the state will help people complete the forms correctly.

West said she thinks many Carbon County residents may be unaware of the program’s existence. With the June 5th deadline so close, West urged qualified applicants to register for the property tax rebate as soon as possible. West provided examples of the average refund residents received in the past.

West said the program wasn’t funded in 2020 because of COVID.

The 2022 Wyoming property tax refund program ends on June 5th. Residents can call the Carbon County Treasurer’s office at 307-328-2631 for more information. Or go to the Wyoming Property Tax Refund System website at wptrs.wyo.gov to apply online.
