An online public survey is now live to gauge community interest and the feasibility of building a modern aquatic center in the Platte Valley. According to the non-profit group behind the effort, the survey will help in developing a conceptual plan for a multi-purpose facility.

Nick Haderlie, who operates the Platte Valley Martial Arts program on Bridge Street, approached the Saratoga Town Council with the idea shortly before Christmas. Haderlie said his team is open to ideas, and they are looking for input from the community.

Haderlie said $40,500 has been raised for the feasibility study. The indoor facility could include a range of aquatic amenities, including a lap pool with lanes. The study will be used to help guide the next steps in the process. Architectural consultants have been engaged to help with the planning a facility that would serve children and adults.

Building an aquatic center is one thing, Haderlie said. Operating and maintaining it will be another. So, buy-in from the entire valley, not just Saratoga, is essential to the ultimate success of the project. Haderlie’s team is holding a public comment meeting in Encampment next Wednesday, January 26, to seek input from residents at the south end of the valley.

Two possible sites for the facility have been identified so far. One is by the community garden; the other above the library. Both are owned by the Town of Saratoga. One of the questions on the community survey asks for other possible locations. You can participate in the survey online at PlatteValleySwimSurvey.com.

The meeting in Encampment on Wednesday night is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Opera House on Rankin Avenue. The public is welcome.
