In Rawlins, no one from the public spoke for or against the $3 recycling rate on their monthly utility bill during last week’s city council meeting and the amendment went onto pass a second reading. Mayor Terry Weickum invited anyone to speak on the issue, but there were no takers.

The public hearing was part of the second reading of 7b-2015, which will change the fixed monthly rate for recycling from $3.00 to $6.00. This will be the first time ever that the city has increased the fee. When the topic of increasing the recycling rate was first raised in June, City Manager Shawn Metcalf acknowledged that the 100 percent increase is larger than they typical fee hikes. Metcalf also said it will apply to all residents whether they use the recycle facility or not.

During last week’s council meeting, the amendment came up for the second of three meetings. It passed on a 6-1 vote.

The amendment to increase the recycling fee to $6.00 faces a third and final hearing before going into effect.
