A local charity group that aids stranded travelers, St. Christopher’s Highway, has assembled a list of Christmas donations for needy residents.
Since August of 2022, St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County has brought together several charitable organizations and the Rawlins Police Department to provide aid to stranded motorists.
For the second year in a row, St. Christopher’s Highway Executive Director Shauna Roberts said the charity has created a reverse advent calendar as a way to give back to the local community. Roberts said unlike a regular advent calendar where you receive a treat each day, the reverse advent calendar asks for a different donation for every day of the month.
Roberts said St. Christopher’s Highway asked organizations across Carbon County what donation items they need heading into Christmas. The items were placed on the reverse advent calendar in a random order, said Roberts.
Roberts said last year’s reverse advent calendar donation event was a success. The St. Christopher’s Highway executive director said this year is shaping up to better than the previous year. Roberts said she is expecting a large number of donations to come in just before Christmas.
Since its foundation in August of 2022, St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County has spent over $24,000 helping 381 needy travelers with gas, hotel rooms, and bus tickets. Roberts said fuel is the most common need of stranded motorists. However, Roberts said last winter, St. Christopher’s Highway spent the majority of its budget on hotel rooms.
To help keep costs down, Roberts said Trevor Green and Damien Cesko of Rawlins Quik Lube only charge for parts when repairing vehicles of stranded travelers sent to them by St. Christopher’s Highway.
Today, St. Christopher’s Highway is asking for donations of peanut butter and jelly in plastic jars. All donations should be dropped off at the Rawlins Police Station, located at 215 5th Street.
