The Boys & Girls Club of Carbon County is opening a chapter in Hanna.

On Monday, January 16th, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the Hanna Miner’s Memorial Recreation Center to celebrate the 23rd site in the state of the Boys & Girls Club of Wyoming.

The Boys & Girls Club offers after-school activities and mentorship for young people. Theresa Pacheco is the chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Carbon County. She said she was looking at establishing a chapter in Saratoga, but felt Hanna was more in need of her organization.

The Town of Hanna doesn’t offer a particularly large number of activities for young people, Pachecho said. She hopes the services her youth organization offers help fill the gap.

Pacheco acknowledged Hanna is experiencing hard times. She said she would like to provide the town with additional programs specific to her organization. If this program is a success, Pacheco said she won’t rule out the possibility of opening a chapter in Saratoga.

The Hanna Miner’s Memorial Recreation Center was built in 1982 by the Carbon County Coal Company to attract people to the town. With the mines now closed, the town still relies on the rec center to offer activities, especially in the winter. Pacheco emphasized the importance of offering fun and interesting things for young people to do. She said she would like to expand access to the Boys & Girls Club across the county.

The opening grand opening of the Hanna chapter starts at 2 p.m. on January 16th at the Hanna Miner’s Memorial Recreation Center. After the ribbon cutting ceremony, snacks and hot apple cider will be provided.
