St. Christohper’s Highway of Carbon County was honored with a Rawlins Community Builder Award.

Every month, the city of Rawlins recognizes organizations and individuals who perform beneficial volunteer services that improve the quality of life in the city. During Tuesday’s council meeting, the August Community Builder Award was given to St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County. Rawlins Public Information Officer Mira Miller said the organization is made up of various faith-based organizations from across the city. Miller said St. Christopher’s Highway saw a group of people not being helped by existing services. The public information officer said St. Christopher’s Highway volunteers assist stranded travelers in a variety of ways.

Miller said St. Christopher’s Highway volunteers worked with local law enforcement agencies to direct stranded travelers toward the charity organization.

The public information officer said over 270 people have taken advantage of the services and discounts St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County offers. Miller also said the organization has created care packages with items a stranded family may need.

The Blessing Bags are available at various locations around the area, such as the Memorial Hospital of Carbon County and the Rawlins Police Department.

Miller said St. Christopher’s Highway is an inspiration for everyone to grow in their compassion and make a difference in any way possible.

St. Christopher’s of Highway of Carbon County President Reverend Bobbie Fitzhugh said she was happy to be a part of the community. Rev. Fitzhugh said even though religious agencies make up the bulk of the organization, St. Christopher’s Highway also caters to the nonreligious.

Rev. Fitzhugh said she and the St. Christopher’s Highway board of directors were very thankful for the Community Builder Award. The reverend said the organization now offers charity across the entirety of Carbon County.

St. Christopher’s Highway board member and owner of Michael’s Big City Steakhouse Mike Lujan said his restaurant helped needy people earlier in the evening. Lujan thanked the St. Christopher’s volunteers and the city of Rawlins.

Rawlins Mayor Terry Wickum thanked Rev. Fitzhugh and the other members of the St. Christopher’s Highway board present at last Tuesday’s meeting. Rev. Fitzhugh was presented with a plaque and a check for one hundred dollars.
