Edits to emails exchanged between a Saratoga councilwoman and the town’s accountant discussing transfers of more than $1 million between accounts to cover-up the negative balance in the general fund are raising eyebrows.

The copy of the email thread that Judy Welton handed out at the council’s budget workshop last Friday differed from the originals Bigfoot 99 received from Mayor John Zieger earlier in the week.

When asked about the changes yesterday, Welton said the edits that she made to both the emails she wrote and to the ones she received from accountant James Childress were inconsequential.

Others question her motivation, and wonder if changing official town correspondence raises more questions about the behavior of elected officials and staff as they react to scrutiny over how Saratoga’s finances are managed. Emma Diercks reports.
