The Saratoga Recreation Department is considering installing magnetic key fob locks on gym doors.

The doors for the gymnasium at the Platte Valley Community Center have keypad coded locks. Gym members are given the code so they may access the gymnasium during off hours. Some members have shared the codes. To prevent non-members from accessing the gym, the town is investigating having key fob activated locks installed.

During the November 7th Saratoga town council meeting, Recreation Director Kim Hemenway said a representative from Lyman-based IT service provider Hooten Tech LLC quoted the town $2,660 to install key fob locks on the gym doors.

Recreation Director Hemenway said she is in talks with Platte Valley Community Center Executive Director Joe Elder about splitting the cost of the door locks.

Hemenway said the key fobs will allow her to prevent people from accessing the gymnasium during certain times and dates.

Hemenway said she is planning to include the first key fob in the initial Recreation Department membership fee. Replacement fobs will cost extra. Hemenway said the fobs will cost the town approximately $7 a piece.

Mayor Chuck Davis said the key fobs will prevent members from sharing the gym door codes. Mayor Davis said the fobs aren’t foolproof, but do provide an extra layer of security for the gymnasium.

Hemenway said the key fob locks require a $100 annual fee for Hooten Tech to host the database of authorized users.

Mayor Davis instructed Hemenway to work with Town Treasurer Corina Daley to find the money for the new door locks in the Recreation Department’s budget.

The mayor said the council will revisit the matter during the next meeting on November 21st.

The council agreed to wait until the next meeting to make a decision on the gymnasium door locks. In the meantime, the Platte Valley Community Center Joint Powers Board will decide if they are willing to cover half of the cost of the locks.
