This Sunday, October 11th, Carbon County Search and Rescue East Division is hosting an open house in the Snowy Range.

Encampment Mayor and Search and Rescue East Division volunteer Shannon Fagan explained that the event will give members of the public an opportunity to experience how the Search and Rescue team prepares and conducts rescue operations.

Open house attendees can also check out the county’s Haglund tracked rescue vehicle. Search and Rescue volunteer Fagan said the machine is an important tool for the team, being deployed in the mountains and occasionally on Interstate 80.

The Haglund was also used to transport stranded motors off Interstate 80 during May’s spring snowstorm.

Fagen said the open house will showcase other equipment Carbon County Search and Rescue uses to assist people in hard‑to‑reach locations.

While the open house will allow the public to observe how Carbon County Search and Rescue operates, the hope is that it will also attract new volunteers to the team. In a county nearly the size of New Jersey, search and rescue operations are split into two divisions, east and west. Fagen said additional volunteers are always needed to support the east division’s extensive coverage area.

She added that the Search and Rescue team benefits from having members positioned throughout the county who know their local terrain. Volunteers don’t necessarily need specialized training to join the team. Instead, they can draw on their unique backgrounds, such as snowmobiling, horseback riding, and skiing, to assist in search and rescue operations.

Fagan explained how to volunteer for Carbon County Search and Rescue.

The Carbon County Search and Rescue East Division open house is this Sunday, October 11th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lincoln Park in the Snowy Range. Fagen described how to find the location for those unfamiliar with the area.

The open house is free to attend, and visitors can purchase 50/50 raffle tickets, with half the proceeds supporting Search and Rescue East Division. You do not need to be present to win.
