Hanna officials will open the town’s landfill this Sunday, October 25th, to encourage residents to beautify the community.

The Hanna Waste Center is currently open five days a week, from Tuesday to Saturday. During Tuesday evening’s Hanna Town Council meeting, Mayor Charlie George said residents have asked to have the landfill available on Sundays as well. He said the extra day will give people another chance to dispose of garbage collected during community‑wide cleanup efforts, but Mayor George added that the transfer station saw very little traffic when it was previously open on a Sunday.

Despite limited participation in the past, the governing body agreed that residents should have another opportunity to drop off trash as they work to beautify the community. However, the town can’t afford to pay employees to supervise the transfer station for more than five days a week. Instead, Mayor George suggested having members of the Town Council donate their time to staff the waste center.

The governing body unanimously agreed to volunteer to run the Hanna Waste Center on Sunday, October 25th, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A notice will be displayed on the electronic sign in front of town hall, and flyers will be posted around town informing residents of the temporary Sunday hours. The council members will track how many people visit the transfer station that day to decide whether Sunday hours should become permanent, replacing a weekday.
