New name and other changes coming to Higher Education Center

For the first time in nearly two decades, the Higher Education Center in Rawlins will offer all of its classes under one roof. The make-over includes a name change, as well. The facility will become the Carbon County Career and Technical Education Center. Cali O’Hare has the details.

 

Saratoga Care Center practices for emergencies

Residents and staff at the Saratoga Care Center were evacuated on Saturday during their annual emergency drill. Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator, John Zieger, described the drill as a success with staff and residents shaving three to four minutes off of last year’s evacuation time. Dry, hot weather brings increased fire danger to Platte Valley

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the high country of the Snowy and Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges for today and tomorrow. High temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds mean fire danger will be high from 11 in the morning until 8 in the evening on both days. Humidity levels will fall to the single digits and low middle teens. On Wednesday, relative humidity levels in the Platte Valley fell to 13% with temperatures in the low and middle 90’s. Land managers report vegetation remains dry. On the Badger Creek Fire, officials say smoke and fire activity will be more visible in the interior of the fire for the next two days. Cooler and wet weather is expected by Friday.

 

Ekola Bridge for sale as Medcine Bow River gets new crossing

Out with the old and in with the new: Since upgrading to a wider and stronger bridge over the Medicine Bow River, the Carbon County Commissioners have decided to surplus the old steel truss bridge on County Road 121. Officials are now accepting bids from anyone interested in purchasing the nearly 80-year old Ekola Bridge northwest the the Town of Medicine Bow. Cali O’Hare reports.

USDA program may bring more agricultural classes, healthier lunches to Carbon County schools

The USDA’s Farm to School program is expanding in Wyoming. That means schools in Carbon County may offer more ag-oriented classes and maybe healthier lunches. Emma Diercks has more.

 

Sports: Lady Tigers get new volleyball coach

The Encampment Volleyball Team is under new direction moving forward, but it comes from a familiar face. Joey Saverine has the story.

The Rockies found a new way to lose on Tuesday. In San Francisco, the usually reliable righty, Adam Ottavino, saw a 15-inning scoreless streak end when he walked in the winning run. Meanwhile, Colorado hitters came up empty after ten chances with runners in scoring position. The result, the Rockies lost to the Giants 3 to 2  and fall to seven games out of first.
