Reports of numerous duck and goose carcasses piled up on a county road outside Saratoga town limits drew attention from Wyoming Game and Fish this week.

Just west of Saratoga along County Road 500, around two dozen dead ducks and geese were found on BLM land. Platte Valley’s new Game Warden Levi Wood was called to the scene. After examining the remains, Wood concluded the meat was legally harvested. He said it appears that no major crime was committed.

Two area residents alerted Bigfoot 99 to the pile of carcasses. The fowl were dumped near another location where hunters toss unused animal carcasses. Wood said this is the time of year for that sort of thing to happen.

Game wardens keep tabs on both hunters and wildlife, which are state property. Wood said he’s seeing a relatively slow hunting season.

Despite the relative quiet of this hunting season, Wood isn’t holed up in his office. Although he is not living the high-drama escapades of a Wyoming game warden in a C.J. Box novel, Wood still has to respond to the usual types of calls.

While poaching is a problem that Wyoming Game and Fish take very seriously, it appears that these waterfowl were taken legally.
