Wyoming joins the world in mourning the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. Britain’s longest-ever reigning Monarch died Thursday. Both the United States and the Wyoming flags are flying at half-mast in her honor.
The queen died yesterday at the age of 96. President Joe Biden ordered flags to remain at half staff until the day of internment.
According to the customs and laws shared by the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth Realms of which Her Majesty was head of state, the Prince of Wales — known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland — as heir became King upon his mother’s passing.
The coronation of King Charles III could come as early as 12 months time. Britain’s period of mourning for the popular and long-living Queen may last much longer.
Her reign lasted 70 years and 214 days. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement of her reign was maintaining popular support for the royal monarchy itself as many other traditional aspects of British life collapsed and disappeared after the country joined the European Union.
Queen Elizabeth II visited Wyoming in 1984 when she stayed at the Quarter Circle A Ranch outside of Big Horn. The ranch was built in 1893 William Moncreiff, a Scottish immigrant and successful businessman.
Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral, the Royal Family’s holiday home in Scotland.
