You may not know it, but the State of Wyoming may be holding some of your money. The amount could be a little. Or it could be a lot. Wyoming’s Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office paid out a record $7.4 million to current and former residents for the fiscal year that ended on June 30th. One person received a check worth $500,000.
Last year’s payout was $2.3 million more than the amount of money put into people’s hands during the year prior.
According to the division’s Communication Director, Jeff Robertson, the state treasurer’s office receives the money from a variety of sources and holds onto it until the rightful owner can be located.
Each of the 50 states has its own division of Unclaimed Property. Wyoming deposits the money it receives from the various sources in an interest-bearing account until the rightful owner can be found.
The Unclaimed Property Division maintains a website where you can search to see if the state is making interest off money owed you. The website is www.mycash.wyo.gov.
A quick search showed that Wyoming is holding onto $37.82 of Bigfoot 99’s money.
According to the Treasurer’s office, the largest claim paid in Carbon County over the last year was for $12,199.
Statewide, 108 payments of $10,000 or more found their way to the rightful owners. Still that’s small change. A total of 12 checks were issued with a value of $100,000 or more. Robertson said his department hand-delivered a check for $580,000 to woman in Sweetwater County.
According to the Divisions of Unpaid Claims, the largest remaining property in Carbon County is valued at more than $101,000.
