The youngest person to ever serve on the Board of Carbon County Commissioners took the oath of office on Tuesday.

Before the regularly scheduled Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Elk Mountain Fire Fighter Garrett Irene was sworn in by District Court Judge Honorable Dawnessa Snyder.

Twenty-eight-year-old Irene took the seat vacated by Byron Barkhurst during the middle of his term. On October 17th, Commissioner Barkhurst resigned his position on the board, citing personal reasons. Under state law, the Carbon County Republican Party was given 20 days to choose three candidate2s for board consideration.

During the November 2nd Republican Party meeting in Elk Mountain, Irene, Saratoga rancher Emilee Berger, and former Carbon County Republican Party Chairman Joey Correnti were chosen out of a field of eight candidates to go before the county commissioners.

After the conclusion of the November 21st Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, the commissioners took turns questioning the three finalists. After an executive session, the board voted to appoint Irene to Barkhurst’s empty seat.

Irene, who will fill the remainder of Barkhurst’s term, will serve until January of 2025.
