The Wyoming Cowboy football team, coming off Saturday night’s upset win over nationally ranked Texas Tech, began work for week 2 yesterday.

Next up, at the War this Saturday, is Portland State. The Vikings fell to the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, 81-to-7.

Wyoming Head Coach Craig Bohl said he was surprised by the final score.

The Cowboys are coming off a great overtime win over Texas State that was televised nationally Saturday night. Coach Bohl said he’ll be looking for continuing improvement this week from the Cowboys, who started slow Saturday night, but ultimately overcame a 17-point early deficit and found a way to win.

Coach Bohl said his squad leaned on their pride and conditioning to overcome the big early deficit to hold the Red Raiders. After the sloppy start, the Cowboy defense held one of the nation’s top offenses in check in the final three quarters.

A balanced offensive attack that featured 171 yards rushing and 149 yards passing lifted the Pokes to the win.

The performance earned attention in the national rankings released on Tuesday. The Cowboys appeared in both rankings for the first time since the 2016 season. Wyoming earned three points in the Associated Press poll and eight points in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll

Saturday’s matchup with Portland State will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. This is the third-straight season that the Cowboys have faced a member of the Big Sky Conference, after defeating Northern Colorado last season and downing Montana State in 2021.

Kickoff is set for two p.m. with the pregame show starting here on Bigfoot 99 at 12:30.
