At the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty overcame Journalism in 2:30 minutes of mud and glory at the rain-soaked track on Saturday.
At the turn, Journalism began making the move on the leaders with Sovereignty breaking at the same time on the outside and pulling away in the final 15th of a mile.
Sovereignty raced well back in the 19-horse field until the final turn, when last year’s 2-year-old champion, Citizen Bull, began to fade from the lead.
The homebred colt, a son of Into Mischief, turned into the stretch and, as the field straightened out for the long run to the finish, saw only Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism ahead of him.
