The countdown clock to the first game of the Wyoming Cowboy Football season started clicking yesterday.

Fall training camp kicked off Wednesday in Laramie. On the calendar, Saturday, September 2nd is the date that is circled. The Red Raiders of Texas Tech are the first opponent on the schedule.

Head coach Craig Bohl sounded positive after the first official day of fall camp was in the books. Bohl said his squad looks good coming into the new season.

The Cowboys are a more mature football team this year after field one of the youngest teams in the country last year. Their 7-6 record and second place finish in the Mountain West under new quarterback Andrew Peasley surprised many. Last year’s Cowboys team defeated league rivals Air Force, Colorado State, Hawai’i, Utah State and American Athletic Conference member Tulsa. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Pokes got the job done.

Quarterback Andrew Peasley is back as a second-year starter who was learning a new system after transferring from Utah State.

Peasley connected on 144-of-275 passes for the season, racking up 1,574 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His completion rate was 52 percent. He also rushed for 339 yards on 81 carries with two touchdowns. The record was solid enough to earn the QB academic All-Mountain West honors.

Peasley returns as the starting quarterback this year with a new determination. Coach Bohl was quick to mention his quarterback yesterday after practice as he clicked through the highlights of the day-one practice.

The Cowboys are a more seasoned team than the one that took the field on opening day last year. A total of 17 of 24 starters return this season, with 10 of 11 starters returning on defense, a group of five starters on offense plus its starting place-kicker and starting punter.

Coach Bohl said he likes the attitude the returners brought back to Laramie this year. The season officially starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 2nd.  Of course, Bigfoot 99 will have the radio broadcast right here.
