The Wyoming Cowboys led Grand Canyon most of the way on Saturday night and then stunned the crowd in Pheonix with a late 12-point run to defeat the Lopes by five on their on their home court.
Keith Kelley had the call. The gritty win improves Wyoming to 15-12 overall, 6-10 in conference play. Grand Canyon falls to 17-10, and 10-6 in Mountain West play. The Cowboys have four regular season games remaining before championship play begins on March 11.
Wyoming freshman Simm-Marten Saadi from Estonia and senior Leland Walker from Indiana led Cowboy shooters with each putting up 13 points. Naz Meyer added 11.
Wyoming shot 40 percent from the field and hit eight threes against the Lopes. The Pokes also went 14-of-19 from the free throw line and scored 17 points off of turnovers.
Head Coach Sundance Wicks was fired up in the post-game interview.
The Pokes return to action tomorrow in a Tuesday night game at Boise State, to battle the Broncos at 7 p.m. The Broncos sit just above Wyoming in conference standings with an 8-8 record. Boise won the first matchup in January at home 81-65.
