The Wyoming Cowboys went on a 10-0 run with six minutes to play last night in El Paso against South Dakota State to come away with a 78-65 win in the first game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

The Cowboys up by five at the half. They came out slow to start the second before heating up and going on a run and taking control of the game.

Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney had the call as the Cowboys turned red hot at the right time to take complete control of the game.

The Cowboys are 7-4 on the season and continue to be the best three-point shooting team in the country. They went 8 of 16 from beyond the line against the Jack Rabbits.

Mason Walters, making his first appearance of the season after recovering from an injury, was three of four in the second half. Akuel Kot led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Walters, added 12 points. Brendan Wenzel and Sam Griffin added nine points with Griffin adding a career-high nine rebounds.

Head coach Jeff Linder was jubilant with how the Cowboys came back from the 84-71 loss to Weber State on Saturday. Coach Linder chalked up the win to his team’s collective grit and toughness.

The jackrabbits jumped out to a fast start, taking 12-6 lead. The Cowboys regained the lead at the 14:26 mark of the first half. Despite the slow offensive start in the second half, the Cowboy defense was top notch throughout the game.

The Pokes will play in the tournament championship matchup tonight against UTEP. The Miners edged out Norfolk 67-65 in the late game. Tip tonight will happen sometime between 7 and 7:30. Either way, Bigfoot 99 will be on the air at 6:30 with the pregame show.
