The Rochelle Ranch Golf Course is offering a new way for people to enjoy the links: Fling Golf.
Invented in 2012 by Alex Van Alen, Fling Golf is an alternative to traditional golf. Fling Golf is played on standard golf courses alongside regular golfers. Rawlins Parks and Recreation Director Jason Sehon said instead of using a bag full of different clubs, Fling Golf players carry one club called a FlingStick.
A FlingStick looks like a traditional golf club, except the head has a hollow pocket to place the golf ball in. Players launch the ball by swinging the club overhead, in a similar manner to a lacrosse stick. When on the green, the FlingStick is used as a putter.
Sehon gave an example of how Fling Golf allows golfers and non-golfers to play at the same time on the same course.
Sehon said right now the Rochelle Ranch Golf Course is gauging interest in Fling Golf. The parks and rec director said the pro shop has four FlingSticks available to borrow, free of charge. Daily rates and cart rental fees still apply. Sehon encouraged everyone, including fans of traditional golf, to test out the new sport.
Sehon said if Fling Golf is popular among players, the golf course will purchase more FlingSticks and hold training sessions next summer.
Sehon said regular golfers have an advantage with the distance they can hit the ball. However, Sehon said once people get the hang of releasing the ball, Fling Golf is a little easier to control than a traditional golf swing. The parks and rec director said the more straightforward handling combined with not having to swap clubs means Fling Golf players are able to keep up with regular golfers.
Sehon said golf courses across the country are beginning to offer Fling Golf. The parks and rec director said the new game doesn’t require any alterations to existing courses. Sehon said Fling Golf may get more people interested in learning traditional golf from Head Golf Professional Kevin Gannon.
Sehon said Fling Golf is another activity available in Rawlins that brings families together for outdoor recreation.
