With the resignation of Byron Barkhurst from the Carbon County Board of Commissioners earlier this month, the process to name his replacement picked up speed this week.

Qualified applicants had until Sunday noon to submit their applications to the Carbon County Republican Party. Seven residents submitted their names. The list will be whittled down to three names on Thursday. That list will be submitted to the board of commissioners.

On Monday, Carbon County Republican Party Chairman Paul Metevier released the names of the seven applicants who completed the nomination process and submitted the required information to the party regulars.

The seven applicants are:

  • Saratoga Police Lieutenant John Moore,
  • Former Carbon County GOP Chairman Joey Correnti
  • Memorial Hosptial of Carbon County Board of Trustees Secretary Jerry Steele.
  • Sinclair Refinery Plant Operator James Hinkle.
  • Elk Mountain Fire Department Secretary and Treasurer Garret Irene.
  • Platte Valley rancher Emilee Berger of Berger Beef.
  • And former Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board Chairman Richard Raymer.

The Carbon County Republican Central Committee will meet in Elk Mountain on Thursday, November 2, to cast their ballots for the candidates. The party regulars will select three names from the seven nominees.

The Carbon County Commissioners will then decide which of the three applicants will take the empty seat on the board.

The Carbon County Republican Central Committee meeting begins at 6:00 pm, this Thursday, at the Elk Mountain town hall, located at 206 Bridge Street. The meeting is open to the public.
