The City of Rawlins officially appointed Pinita Maberry-Nave as the new city attorney.

In July of 2023, City Attorney Gwendolyn Wade retired. Wade served as city attorney since early 2022. Following Wade’s resignation, the city council voted to retain Slow and Steady Law Firm, out of Saratoga, as the interim city attorney until a permanent replacement could be found.

On Tuesday, the city announced that Pinita Maberry-Nave was chosen to be the new city attorney. Maberry-Nave was working for Slow and Steady while the law firm was serving as interim attorney for Rawlins.

Maberry-Nave is a Rawlins native. After graduating from Rawlins High School in 1994, she continued her education with the intent of becoming a rocket scientist, earning her bachelor’s degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Wyoming. Instead, she ended up studying law at the University of Denver.

While studying for her bachelor’s degree at UW, Maberry-Nave said she worked for a Laramie-based attorney. While there, she learned the ins and outs of practicing law.

After spending five years working in Laramie, she went to the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law, earning her Juris Doctorate.

Following her graduation from law school, she moved to California where she began working for a small family law firm. Eventually, she was hired to work in the legal division of a large corporation. She focused on ensuring the company complied with Food and Drug Administration regulations, a task she enjoyed.

After six years, Maberry-Nave said company restructuring caused her to move to a small personal injury law firm near San Diego. While there, she married. After the untimely death of her husband, Maberry-Nave returned home to Rawlins, where she fell in love with the small city once again.

While in Rawlins, she began working for the Carbon County District Court. Having worked primarily as a defense attorney, she enjoyed practicing law from a different perspective.

Maberry-Nave spent four years in the District Court before moving to Slow and Steady Law Firm. While representing the Saratoga-based company, she became the interim attorney for the city of Rawlins. She said her job as interim attorney was to handle the day-to-day legal obligations of the city.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor Terry Weickum announced that Maberry-Nave had been officially chosen to serve as the city attorney. In a written statement, Mayor Weickum said, “We are excited to have Pinita join the incredible Rawlins team.”

Mayberry-Nave said she has left Slow and Steady Law Firm to work full-time for the City of Rawlins. The attorney said serving the city requires her to consider all aspects of how the city operates before making a legal decision.

Maberry-Nave expressed her excitement over her new position. She said everyone must work together to ensure the success of the city. She also encouraged residents to weigh in on the legal direction of Rawlins.

The city posted a Facebook announcement about its new attorney. The post states that, “Outside of her professional endeavors, Pinita is actively engaged in volunteer work in Rawlins and serves on several law-related boards and committees.” The post goes onto say that the city attorney enjoys quality time with her family, reading and spending time outdoors with her dogs.
